Advice

Many of you know that I don't ask for advice very often.  (I give it often, probably unwanted most of the time.  Sorry about that.)  I like to figure things out for myself, and I probably want to appear capable.  Both of those things stem from the anxiety, I think.  No one wants to look like a fool, but with anxiety, I desperately don't want to look like a fool.  I can think of a few times when I was the fool.  (Okay, I'm going on a tangent here; bear with me, I will get to the point.)

Once, I said something in front of a choir of 100 people, and it came out wrong, and they all laughed.  And it still took me another minute to figure out why they thought it was so funny.  I was completely humiliated.  And they couldn't let me live it down for a long time.

And another time, I attempted to join an aerobics class.  I have never been coordinated (or maybe I'm so afraid of looking like a fool, that I have not practiced enough to be coordinated).  I couldn't get some of the moves, and I kept losing my balance.  And a few people laughed at me, so I quit.  I know how I tend to perceive people who are tone-deaf.  And I just can't stand being perceived in the same way with regards to body movement.  It makes me sick to my stomach, and it makes me want to cry.  (Yes, we are talking desperate in the form of a mild panic attack.)

So, I'm going to ask for advice, at the risk of looking like a complete fool.  Because as regards beauty and beauty products, I am tragically uninformed.  So for those of you who have longed to give me a makeover, here is your virtual chance.

Here is my situation:  I have dry skin around my eyes.  I suspect it is psoriasis or eczema.  When washing my face, I have to rub my eyes a fair amount to remove all the make up.  If I don't rub it off with soap, it won't come off all the way; so then I end up rubbing even harder with a towel.  (I even tried makeup removing wipes, but their texture was still too rough.)  This perpetuates the original problem.  If I don't wear makeup for several days, it improves.  I apply lotion to my skin twice a day.  So, first, is there a super-gentle makeup remover in existence?  And second, is there a better moisturizer for the skin around my eyes?

I'm hoping to try over-the-counter products before I seek help from a dermatologist.  Thanks!

Ok, I feel like I'm going on a sales pitch, but I don't mean to. I worked as a Mary Kay salesperson for about a year (I'm terrible at sales, btw) but I learned about some of their products that are awesome. One that I LOVED was their oil-free eye makeup remover. It's a liquid that you shake to mix the solution, then put a little bit on a cotton ball and it wipes off ALL eye makeup. It's really amazing and as gentle as whatever you use to wipe with. Here's a link.

As for sensitive skin care, including around the eyes, there is a set of solutions offered at Mary Kay. You can see them in this set. The Day Solution and the Night Solution are what I'm referring to. I've only used a small sample set that lasted me a couple weeks, but I'm pretty sure they will help your skin. Together, they make your skin feel amazing and healthy. The reason I never bought the full size is because they are $30 a bottle (yowza!). But if your debating spending just as much or more on a prescription, I thought I'd tell you about this. I never liked the Timewise cleanser and moisturizer, though, also pictured in the link. If you know anyone around you who sells Mary Kay they might have a sample size Day and Night Solution for a lower price.

Ha ha! It would have been funny for Scott to give me the advice! :) Thanks, Britta, for your advice. I will try these things. (And I remember when you and I did Mary Kay facials once.)

Some Sharley thoughts...
I have a friend who is allergic to makeup and cannot wear any. Maybe you are allergic to something in your makeup?.? You could try using only mascara.
Perhaps you're allergic to milk ;) No really, bear with me. I've heard that milk allergies often manifest themselves as eczema on the face. I've heard that those with milk-troubles as infants, can continue to have difficulties as adults. Just a thought worth possible experimentation.
Another idea: Are your moisturizers hypoallergenic and fragrance free? You may just have sensitive skin and need a more sensitive formula. I like Curel fragrance free lotion, and Eldon, who has sensitive skin, uses equate brand Eucerin cream. I've even been using Dove sensitive/fragrance free soap rather than a face cleaner. It's helped me too.
And lastly, I had a dermatologist tell me to only wash my face once a day--say, in the evening to get the day's grime off. I tend to have rather dry skin, and doing this has improved it a lot. Hard/hot water and/or washing frequently tends to strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it susceptible to dryness. The skin then tries to redouble it's efforts to moisturize, causing possibly extra oiliness and even acne. Or it may have difficulties recovering at all, feeling dry and flaky constantly.
Cutting back washing, using warm water, a sensitive soap and moisturizer can greatly improve skin dryness.
Hope you're able to find a simple solution! Love ya!

I just keep trying stuff. Especially free stuff from Jared's work. And they gave him an ultrasonic cleaner device and a microdermabrasion device. Plus the facial care line. ANd I have use apricot scrub. Definitely the gentle lotion. I'm probably not much help.

There is an eye make up remover (not sure if it's oil free) through maybelline or cover girl that I have used and it seems to work fine.

I actually don't like any of the eye make up removers. I always seem to some how get them in my eye, and they always seem oily. I had a friend in high school show me the best idea: Get a Q-tip. Put a little face lotion on your finger, rub the q-tip in it, and then use that to clean off your eye makeup. It has worked fabulously for me, so I haven't ever tried anything else since.
