Offended

Today I was walking through a store I frequently shop at. In the very front of the store I saw a life-size poster of a mostly nude woman. Now, you may think I'm prudish, but I was completely offended by the poster. When I complained to the store, they said they could do nothing because the poster belonged to a lessee of that space. When I complained to the lessee of the space (parking my kids around the corner so they couldn't see the ugly poster), they asked me, "What's wrong with it?" I exclaimed, exasperated, "It's a picture of a naked woman! Take it down!" They did nothing.

ENOUGH!

I've had enough. I hate that every advertisement and every commercial is resorting to sex to sell their product. I don't want sexualized toothpaste! I don't want sexualized makeup! I don't want sexualized toast!

And I've had enough because I'm sick of shielding my children's eyes from this stuff. How sad is it that my kid can't watch Toy Story clips on YouTube because someone thinks they need to add dirty words and dirty plots to something innocent? And how come my husband can't walk into a store without having to avert his eyes every ten steps?

Not only am I disappointed in the venues who choose to portray this stuff, but I'm disgusted by the women who prostitute themselves by modeling for these companies. Is this what America really wants? Is this what you want?

So my question is, what are you going to do about it?

Unfortunately, my complaints and phone calls probably did nothing today. One person can't prove that pornography is not art. It is not beautiful. It is disgusting. And if you agree, then maybe your voice can add to mine, and we can change this epidemic. Don't walk past it again without speaking out against it.

My old roommate is from Las Vegas, and her mom led a campaign against some of the billboards in the city. She was able to get regulations for the ones that were in residential areas so that they were not as smutty. Of course, she couldn't do much about the Strip, but the neighborhoods are more restrictive now about what kinds of billboards are allowed up. So, it can be done!

Good job letting your voice be heard!

That took a lot of guts to confront people, good for you. And you never know what effect you may have. Maybe they will think twice about future ads.. What is that quote about how evil only wins when good men do nothing? You're right, we do need to be more vocal about this stuff. Where do you start?

I have been thinking about some of those same things and I am offended and bothered by it also. I guess it is time that I stand up for my children, husband, women and God. I plan to be more bold and speak out more. Thanks.
