Necessary Evil

Now, please don't get me wrong. I believe personal hygiene is very important. And people should shower daily, wear deodorant, brush their teeth several times a day, and wash their hands 10 to 20 times a day (depending on how many diapers you change and how many little bums you wipe:).

But lately, I have been dreading this particular necessary evil. Not because of the nature of the evil itself (because I like to be clean), but because of the nature of the huge process following the evil.

Showering.

Because even if I take a super-quick shower (and I really do try!), the process afterwards is tedious and annoying, at least for me. And I don't think I have OCD, I'm just responding to my needs:

First: I can't see, because my contacts dry out every time I wear them in the shower.
Evil: Put in the contacts

Second: Nose running
Evil: Blow it, but not before putting in the contacts.

Third: Ear canals wet
Evil: Clean/dry them out

Fourth: Tangled hair
Evil: Have to brush it out before it starts drying, or it's a pain to get through the tangles. And with thin, fine hair, I can't afford to lose any hair to the tangles.

Fifth: Dry face
Evil: Put on lotion

Sixth: Dirty teeth
Evil: Brush them

Seventh: Sweaty armpits
Evil: Put on deodorant

Eighth: Need clothes
Evil: Finding the ones to fit my mood, and putting them on.

Ninth: Ugly face
Evil (and this is if I'm lucky): Putting on makeup

Tenth: Wet hair
Evil (only on Sundays): Drying it, and maybe curling it if I have time or the desire

Eleventh: Wet hair
Evil: (every other day) If it stays wet, and it's cold outside, then I get cold. And I need a sweater.

So you see, I find this process to be extremely annoying. I used to enjoy getting ready for the day, when it was just me, and even when it was just me and the hubby. Now, I find it to be a necessary evil and a frustrating use of my time.

Alas, it cannot be helped. See you in an hour.

Funny, I was thinking something very similar just the other day! The whole process is vastly annoying and time-consuming.
ps.. I don't think you could have an ugly face if you tried. When we were there visiting I was reminded of what a classic beauty you are. No joke!

I feel the same way. I have to make myself workout so that I make sure that I get a shower in.

Why has it become so annoying?

Try not washing your hair every day. That will help you a bit. At first your hair may rebel and act all greasy and dirty, but once it gets used to not being washed so often your scalp will produce less oil, so you can go longer without washing your hair. This will also make your hair healthier. I only wash my hair about three times a week, and that has really helped my morning routines and the health of my hair. Also, because I don't wash my hair every day, I can curl it one day and it will pretty much retain it's curl for the next day.

I hate getting ready too. I have to round brush my hair everyday (or do it curly) and that takes time. I try, like Sherry, to not wash it every single day, but my hair isn't like hers and won't keep it's shape over night and gets quite nasty, especially if I workout which I try to do daily.

Nate takes much longer showers than I do, but that's probably because he doesn't have a house full of kids calling his name, trying to get it in, banging on the door, etc., etc.

Brianne, I always relate SO MUCH to your posts! I seriously dread getting ready for the day... in fact, sometimes I stay in my PJ's all day if I don't have anything important to do. You see- if I wash MY hair, it takes me an HOUR to get it done the way I like it (so I feel like I halfway look decent) So I don't wash it but twice a week. Taking a shower is not only a chore, but trying to take a shower while keeping Joselyn entertained is worse. Sometimes I am in the shower and she cries the whole time. I also try to take short 5 minute showers but that is too long for me to bare her crying. What am I going to do when this second baby comes?

I think I have always felt that way and then I think I should like trying to be pretty. If I don't, I feel horrible, but I hate taking the time and energy to do it all. And I don't even have kids yet!

yeah, I totally dread showering too. I was just thinking of how tedious it is that we do this same thing every day and take up like an hour doing it... how much time have I spent in my life doing my hair?... blah

You are hysterical. I suffer from the same dilemma. Why can't we just be quick like men? BTW, congrats on the $5.99 jeans!! WEAR THE BOOTS!! You've gotta sacrifice hubbies and friends to look cute! :)

I have thought the same many times. Most days I look like crud but then there are the days that I really need to look pretty to help me be kind through out the day, so I neglect the kids for an hour or so and get ready. I also found out lately (yeah I might be slow about this info) that anti-persperant deodorant clogs pores and can cause breast cancer. So I have changed to baking soda and it has actually been working, no being constantly wet, no yellow marks and I'm not even stinky.
